about dana burman

Photo of Dana BurmanI started working with computer graphics in the early 1990's. Back then my computer platform of choice was the Commodore Amiga, a computer whose graphics capabilities were advanced for its time. In 1993 I enrolled in Liberty University to study video-production. Before my second year at the school, the curriculum was broadened to include graphic design and writing for print as well as broadcast. In my junior year I was asked to be part of a new production crew whose job was to videotape and edit classes for the distance learning program. I continued to for the distance learning department after I graduated.

In late 1997 I started working as a graphic artist at Clipper Magazine, a high-volume, full-color, magazine-style coupon mailer. I began work as a layout artist on night shift, creating and updating ads in Quark XPress, and finished as a prep artist on day shift. As a prep artist I prepared and edited photographs and other artwork in Photoshop and ensured that pages were ready to go to press using Flightcheck.

Dana on His Old Motorcycle - Picture by Tim KwiatIn December 1999 I moved back to Virginia to help a friend work on a movie he was producing. I was able to return to work at the university and work on visual effects for my friend's film at the same time. In the years that followed, my department at the university changed from video taping classes to producing high-quality promotional videos. I also started doing more and more freelance graphics work on the side.

In 2006, I got married, bought a house and quit my job at the school in order to strike out on my own as a freelancer. I had a contract to do visual effects on my friend's latest project, Pilgrim's Progress. I also worked in live sports broadcasting as a grip, a bug operator and as a tape operator.

With Pilgrim's Progress completed, my wife and I relocated to the Pacific Northwest where the air is fresher and doesn't carry as many allergens. Now I'm looking for new clients to work with or for a full-time job that will use and expand my skill-set.
